What kind of reaction a 100-meter-long, colorful mural blending classic and modern tastes will bring in a historical, culturally rich area? The New Wave, a big outdoor mural, was created by urban artist Lin Zinan in the shade of the plane trees along Hengshan Road, providing a refreshing scene for pedestrians in the high summer. This 100-meter-long, 4.5-meter-tall mural is located on the walls in the pub area on Hengshan Road and produced by internationally renowned street artist Lin Zinan. The artwork is a blend of eastern and western elements and a tribute to classics. The mural reflected the hundred-year history of Hengshan Road as a time machine and contemplates on human civilization and future by playing with light. The 24 partitions on the wall represent the 24 sections in a second on a film on which the light is passing just like the continuation of life. Walking along the mural, you will see figures, flowers, birds and Art Deco style color blocks. The abstract color block in broader specific portrayal and the abstract representation of specific images echo the skill in the intentional blank in traditional Chinese paintings and prepare the momentum for a high tone, pushing the communication between the artist and the viewer to a higher level after the pause. The mural was sponsored by a public art program, The Wall. The donor is a young entrepreneur called Yang Yiqi. He started his own business when he was back in China in 2009 after studying in Switzerland and the United States at a young age. He was inspired by the western art foundation and initiated the program to fulfill his childhood dream. He said, “The art starts from life, where creativity lies. Doing things as perfect as possible in daily life is an expression of art. People can feel a sense of pleasure when they are presented this unique dedication.” He also told us that this program will promote themes and concepts of a new way of living by gathering people who are imaginative about life and art. This mural is an experiment of an integration of life and art. This mural will be on exhibition till the National Day Holiday.

Have you ever watched a match at “Shanghai Stadium” or enjoyed a concert at “Shanghai Indoor Stadium”? Located at the Southwest corner of the city, Shanghai Stadium and Shanghai Indoor Stadium are vehicles of fond memories for most Shanghai residents, and such memories will soon be refreshed. Based on the two stadiums, Xujiahui Sports Park, a new public sports venue, is under development. A 2.5-kilometer jogging track, a part of a pleasantly-greened jogging venue, will replace the existing cement pavement in the future. The design plan of the Park has been disclosed to the public in 1Q17, and the Park broke ground in 1H17. Located to the South of Xujiahui business district, the Park under development stretches to Tianyaoqiao Road, 2nd South Zhongshan Road, Caoxi Road and Lingling Road in four directions, namely East, South, West and North. With a land area of 360,000 square meters and a perimeter of around 2.5 kilometers, the Park consists of Shanghai Stadium, Shanghai Indoor Stadium, Shanghai Swimming Center, Nike Basketball Park, Adidas Football Park and other public fitness facilities. Except for Shanghai Stadium, Shanghai Indoor Stadium and Shanghai Swimming Center, several outdoor training venues will be re-designed to offer more interactive and experience-focused sports facilities, according to sources. Among the legacy venues mentioned above, Shanghai Indoor Stadium, built in 1975, could accommodate 18,000 audiences. It has been the first indoor stadium in China to be used as a theatre and other functions in the past decade. The stadium witnessed the passionate performance by the Rolling Stones and Ronnie O'Sullivan’s “accurate” maneuver of his billiard cue. Standing against the Shanghai Indoor Stadium, Shanghai stadium, built in 1998, was the venue for China’s National Games, Special Olympics, Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008, and other domestic and international events. It is the home court of Shanghai SIPG Football Club. Both stadiums are major witnesses of Shanghai’s sports cultural development. “As the hub of metro lines 1, 3, 4 and 11, the area near Shanghai Indoor Stadium enjoys inherent advantages in attracting traffic and serving the public due to convenient transport and prosperous business development, ” Officials of Xuhui District remarked. The area will evolve into a public space for residents’ entertainment and fitness activities, as well as a venue for international sports events by leveraging opportunities during the development of the Park and improving its green coverage. To develop an open park, existing greening, pavements and footpaths will be re-designed, and Shanghai East Asia Exhibition Hall will be demolished to make room for new football, basketball and volleyball courts and venues for table tennis, badminton and other sports.(Source: Xinmin Evening News)
