  • SIMAA and Maitian Launch Charity Program in Sichuan

A snapshot of certificates awarded to participants of the charity sale. Photographer: Lu Xiang A charity program co-developed by Shangwu International Martial Arts Association (SIMAA) and Maitian Education Foundation (Maitian) was successfully launched in Sichuan province, marking SIMAA’s first charity event. The first Shangwu Martial Art Base, also the first step of this long-planned charity program, was established in Nange Middle School, Huili county of Sichuan Province’s Daliangshan Area. According to sources, the founder of SIMAA had been in Sichuan as a volunteer for the rescue and disaster relief efforts shortly after the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. It has been about a decade since the earthquake, while SIMAA still cares about children in the post-earthquake area and attracts a growing number of highly-aspired social elite to join the association and help children in poverty-stricken areas. Such an aspiration is identical with Maitian’s mission, i.e., improving education for children in poverty-stricken areas. With the idea of “helping children in need is a rewarding experience”, a charity program to revisit Sichuan was developed. According to Hu Zhenghua, Chairman of SIMAA, the charity program was funded by donation from SIMAA members and previous charity sales. Currently, they sponsored over 200 targeted students. Meanwhile, leveraging on its strengths, SIMAA will instill in students the idea of “righteousness and independence” and optimistic views by developing martial art venues and sending coaches to the school. After the conclusion of the first event, they will start the second one soon.(Source: xuhuibao.com)

  • Pause for Literature Show in Metro, Say “Hi” to Great Writer

On May 18th this year, the International Museum Day, Xuhui District “Guangqi Museum Alliance” will be officially established. “Stop to smell the roses.” This is a proverb calling for people to slow down, and enjoy the leisure of slow life. However, in Shanghai’s rail transit station with millions of daily passengers, a “metro culture gallery” less than 50 meters long attracts pedestrians to pause and appreciate. Prior to today, the World Book Day, on April 22nd, the “Book of Love──Ba Jin & Book Illustration Literature Exhibition” was unveiled in the Shanghai Metro Culture Art Gallery at the Xujiahui Metro Station Exit 5, so that citizens halt at any time to admire the invaluable historical literature materials and photos exclusively from the Former Residence of Ba Jin. In 2016, the Xuhui District Culture Bureau and the Shanghai Metro Public Culture Development Center jointly created the “Xujiahui Metro Culture Art Gallery”, to promote construction of Xujiahui metro culture. The gallery is located between Exit 5 and Exit 7 Xujiahui Station Metro Line 1, with a total length of around 48 meters. Both parties collaborate for five years for the first time, and plan to build a cultural gallery with Shanghai’s characteristics and Xuhui’s profound historical heritage, for passengers to view works, listen to music, smell fragrance, learn knowledge, and feel spirit once stepping into the metro station. Last August, the cultural gallery made its debut, focusing on Xuhui’s cultural relics and museum, and displaying historical photos of Xujiahui Library, Xujiahui Museum, Xujiahui Observatory, Aurora College, Xujiahui Catholic Church, etc. The Ba Jin Literature Exhibition this time is the second official exhibition of cultural gallery, and all exhibits are provided by the Former Residence of Ba Jin, including Mr. Ba Jin’s handwritten book order, exclusive hand-painted portrait, partial manuscript of the Essays from Memory, as well as Bai Jin’s precious collections of the Shuobu Series, the Corpus of Turgenev Works & Letters and the English edition of Past and Random Thoughts purchased along the Seine River Paris in 1928. Ou Xiaochuan, Deputy Director of the Xuhui District Culture Bureau told reporter that the Xuhui District Culture Bureau started cooperation with Shentong Metro since last year, and held small cultural exhibition in the free space of Xujiahui Metro Station Exit 5, for the purpose of establishing public cultural space with in-depth content, while attracting pedestrians to stop and feel the profound and impressive culture of Xuhui and Shanghai. Each exhibition with the theme selected by the Xuhui District Culture Bureau, concentrates on two themes of Xuhui’s historical and urban development, Xuhui’s cultural celebrities; based on such features as large traffic and diversified crowed in the metro station, all exhibits that fail to show in the museum, library and former celebrity residence due to limited space are transferred to the rail transit station, to both bring invaluable historical materials into the light, and offer hectic citizens opportunity of visiting cultural sites and museums, accessing humanities and history, while eliminating pressure of daily work and commuting. The reporter notes that as per the government work target proposed by Xuhui District Government at beginning of this year, Xuhui will promote co-construction of district museum this year, and plan to gather the 150-year-old Xujiahui Library, Meteorological Museum, Shanghai Film Museum, Tushanwan Museum and other cultural museum resources into a museum alliance, integrated with a variety of former celebrity residence resources in Xuhui District, to add quantity and quality of public cultural exhibitions, lectures and performances. According to Ou Xiaochuan’s introduction, on May 18th the International Museum Day, Xuhui District “Guangqi Museum Alliance” will be officially established, and the Ba Jin Literature Exhibition fires an “opening shot” of alliance activity; for the next step, the Xuhui District Culture Bureau will cooperate with Huajing Town, to focus on China’s well-known cotton textile worker and technician reformer at the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty, on the basis of Huang Daopo Memorial, and present the story of Huang Daopo in metro station. So far, the planning of exhibition has been accomplished. In addition, on June 10th the Chinese Cultural Heritage Day, an extraordinary exhibition of old music records will be held in the Xuhui Old House Art Center at No.393 Wukang Road. Xuhui District Culture Bureau will join hands with the Former Residence of Qian Xueseng, the Former Residence of Song Qingling and the Shanghai Conservatory of Music; thereby visitors will observe a significant milestone in the history of Chinese music record, through rare collections of Song Qingling, SCM Professor Zhou Xiaoyan, Mrs. Qian Xueseng and famous soprano Jiang Ying. The organizer will also invite private collectors and musicians in the field of Shanghai music record for discussion, attended by the public. On June 20th, the Xuhui Old Villa Photography Exhibition co-organized by the Shanghai History Museum and the Xuhui District Culture Bureau will open in the same venue, presenting a soul-stirring old villa tour to surrounding residents and passing tourists in early summer.
