There are also leaders of the Institute level to be in charge and some personnel, specialized in entomology, to carry out the base’s daily work. Shanghai Insect Museum of Chinese Academy of Sciences is the former Insect Department of Museum Heude set up by French Priest P.M.Heude, which was taken over by Chinese Academy of Sciences with the liberation of China in 1949. After about 50 years’ development, it has become a large specialized museum of insect collections. The museum is the only specialized museum of insect collections in East China and even the whole southern part of China with extremely rich resources of popularization and education of sciences of entomology. The museum has a long history of collection, and its specimens are from all through the country, and rich in class groups. The quantity of its collections reaches to about 1 million, which enjoys a prestigious fame both inside and outside China. There are a lot of specimens of valuable and rare insects that are on the verge of extinction and are also a lot of domestic and foreign specimens of injurious insects found in the danger quarantine. In 1998, for the purpose of supporting popularization and education of sciences and accelerating construction of popularization and education of sciences base, leaders of the Institute spared an official area of 100 square meters in the research building and invested special funds. Under the joint efforts of all the personnel of the Insect Specimens Museum, an exhibition hall was set up, which can demonstrate the lives of insects, the variety of insects, the relations between insects and human beings, insects and arts and the appreciation of insects as well. The rich insect specimen exhibits and their vivid picture explanations add much distinguishing feature to the exhibition hall. After the insect exhibition hall was open to the society, it had aroused rather a profound reverberation and gained great attention of the upper leaders. The children of the kindergartens, the students of middle and primary schools, the people fond of biology and even the individual and group tourists from the other provinces and countries visit the base and learn about insects one after another. Many a press and media from Shanghai, Beijing, Jiangsu, etc. have come to make special reports on this. The insect museum is a good channel for people to understand the mass nature. And it’s also an important base for insect specimen collections, insect taxonomy research, life sciences research, protection of variety of insects, resources development and utilization and popularization of the knowledge of entomology. As a group of the richest species in its variety, insect has a close relation with man’s daily life and business activities. Under the circumstances of increasing emphasis is put on the human being, environment and resources, its significance of popularization is more outstanding. Shanghai Insect Museum, Chinese Academy of Sciences (the former Insect Specimen Museum of Shanghai Insect Institute) has a better basis, more strong advantage and characteristics in popularization and education of sciences. For many years, the museum has done a large amount of works in popularization of insect knowledge. Since 1991, especially in every year’s Festival of Science and Technology, it has hosted thousands of middle and primary students. At the time of popularizing insect knowledge, it helps the students to establish the belief of loving sciences from childhood. It possesses a definite social influence. From the setting up of “the exhibition hall of popularization of entomology”, it has been basically open to the society and free of charge. There are always specialized interpreters to give earnest explanations and guidance on popularization of insect sciences. It has become the only exhibition site specialized only in insects in Shanghai. When we were participating in the past years’ “Shanghai Festival of Science and Technology”, the first and second “National Week of Science and Technology” and the series of activities jointly held with Shanghai base for popularization of science, we actively made good preparations, implemented all the contents of popularization of sciences, fully utilized our scientific and technological advantages and reflected the characteristics of popularization of sciences of entomology. We also painstakingly designed and made pamphlets and floating boards to promote the popularization of sciences of entomology. We transmitted what we are researching in entomology into something that could be easily understood, and provided them with vivid explanations including beautiful pictures and lively words. The people can go near the nature, enjoy the nature and know about insects in a relaxed and happy atmosphere, and eventually learn the knowledge of insects.
